Youth Competition

2017 Solo Classical Guitar Competition – Youth Division

The 2017 Northwest Festival Competition will take place on April 7-9, 2017 in Portland, OR and is open to all guitarists 18 or under residing in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Eligibility on these criteria is subject to the discretion of the organizing board. Previous 1st prizewinners of the competition will not be eligible.

Prizes*

  • 1st Prize: $300.00
  • 2nd Prize: $200.00
  • 3rd Prize: $100.00

*Additional prizes provided by D’Addario for all finalists.


Competition Format

The competition will be conducted in three rounds – music selections may be repeated in subsequent rounds.

1) Qualifying Round by submitted recording.

2) Semi-Final Round chosen from the Qualifying Round. Live performance before a panel of judges and open to the public.

3) Final Round before a panel of judges and open to the public.


Qualifying Round

Competitors should submit the following:

1) A recording of two contrasting pieces – can be submitted as an MP3 via email (10 MB attachment limit), a link to YouTube or Soundcloud, or a physical CD.

2) A typed copy of your proposed program to be performed in the final round, maximum 15 minutes of music. Tuning or pausing between the selections is not included in the timing.

3) Contact information, including name, phone number and email address.

Entries must be received by February 17, 2017. Semi-finalists will be notified by March 1, 2017. Competition entry is free, but semi-finalists are required to register as participants in the Northwest Guitar Festival by March 15, 2017.

Semi-Final Round – Saturday April 8, 12:30pm

  • There will be a brief orientation meeting preceding the semi-final round.
  • Each competitor will play one or two free choice pieces, not to exceed 5 minutes.
  • All pieces must be performed from memory.
  • 3 competitors will advance to the Final Round. Their names will be announced before the beginning of the 3 PM afternoon concert.

Final Round – Saturday April 8, 4:30 PM

  • Each competitor will play their proposed program of free choice music.
  • All pieces must be performed from memory.
  • The decision of the judges will be final. Competitors are judged on musicianship, technique, programming and presentation. Announcement of the winners will be made directly following the final round.
